We’ve been asked a number of times “Can I expect an increase in horsepower when I switch from my carburetor to your EFI kit and how much?” Well, we have a really good example of the kind of increase you might see from Jorgen Karlsson from Sweden. In this first Dynorun after installing the Pegasus system he picked up 10 rear wheel horsepower. Here is his description of the changes he made to the 100 in S&S motor he has on his Sportster:

In this run the engine is still quite stock (S&S 100″ sportster engine, S&S 600 Cams), just slighty ported heads and improved valve seat angles, custom made 2:2 megaphone exhaust (burns design, fabricated by me, lambda sensor weld bungs in each header) . Custom made fuel and ignition map.

You can see in the info text (below the dyno run graph) i gained about 10 rwhp when changing to the Pegasus Fuel Injection system. The biggest power contributions came from the PFI possibility to give each cylinder different amount of fuel and the feature to create a custom made ignition map. Just by reducing the advance to 30 degree (compared to the Dyna 2000i which terminates at 35 degrees) several horsepower was gained on this 4″X4″ engine.

The drop of power at 6300 rpm came from weakened S&S valve springs. They are now changed to Comp Cams springs. The drop of power at 6300 rpm came from weakened S&S valve springs. They are now changed to Comp Cams springs.

You can see in the Dyno run below that Jorgen got 136 HP out of his 100 in S&S engine with our electronic fuel injection system. Note that part of his increase in horse power comes from the fact that you can control the ignition characteristics as well as the fuel management with our software

In our next post we’ll show his subsequent dyno run where he bumps the power up even further..

At the bottom of this post is his video of the bike on the dyno and some on the street, although these are older clips of the bike when it was carbureted.

Knievel Motorcycles, building on the legacy of the most famous name in motorcycles, has announced the release of its new bobbers and choppers with Euro 3 emissions certification and TUV approval. Key to their meeting the tough Euro 3 requirements was the use of the Pegasus electronic fuel injection system on their new offerings. We worked with Knievel over many months to get their bike approved and they now plan to expand their sales into the growing market for VTwin bikes in Europe and Asia.

We are always looking for agreements to provide our Pegasus fuel injection system to OEM motorcycle builders. The definition of OEM is a little fluid, but we typically think of them as companies making 100 or more bikes a year, usually as “production customs” that can be produced with a number of options, from engine type to handle bars and forward controls.

Besides giving the OEM a fuel management option beyond carburetion, we also offer the ability to work with them on their engine and exhaust system of choice in order to get them Euro 3 compliant. The advantage here is clear: bike makers are now able to sell in markets in Europe and Asia that were closed to them before.

We sell the only bolt-on EFI system on the market that can do this and we have done it twice. We have proprietary software and hardware that makes this possible and 2 years of experience in dealing with Euro 3 and TUV regulations. Our clients have TUV certifications, and. almost as important, the bikes still have the power and response that VTwin riders expect.

Mil has just finished his latest creation, a distinctive all-blue motorcycle that he built for his son. This bike has a 113 cubic inch S&S motor with a 6 speed transmission, Kraft/Ttech (www.krafttechinc.com) single down tube frame, 20 in tire rear and 21 in the front. The seat is custom from Bob Lepera (www.lepera.com) and the primary drive and GMA brakes (www.gmabrakes.com) come from our friends at BDL.

Of course, he installed a Pegasus fuel injection system, so besides dynoing at 113 HP and 124 torque it also gets 49 mpg at 70 mph.

For those who don’t know, Mil Blair is the guy on the other end of the phone when you call with technical questions. You can see a longer bio for Mil on our web site http://www.performancefi.com/about_us.php, but let’s just say that Mil has built more bikes than most custom builders who do it for a living, and he knows how to get power and performance out of a custom-made Harley.

Staying with the blue color scheme, even for the throttle body, Mil used one of the tinted throttle bodies we made early in the development of the Pegasus system. (They are not available right now.) You can also see the unusual choice he’s made for an air cleaner. Since the bike won’t be ridden in areas with much dust he decided to cover the throttle opening with just a screen to keep out pebbles and other big road junk.
